Effective project management depends on teams to carry out the project tasks. Projects are carried out through teams. Managing the people side of projects is often as challenging as mastering the technical aspects. Meeting project objectives is complicated by the development of virtual teams where members are geographically dispersed, increasingly diverse teams where members have different cultural backgrounds, and project stakeholders (e.g., clients, customers, etc.) with conflicting interests.

This two-day course covers alternative approaches to project management including tools and techniques that project managers can use. Topics such as communication, team selection, team dynamics, motivation, and leadership are covered. The participants develop an understanding of how and when to apply various project management techniques.

  • Selecting the "problem solving" strategies to apply
  • Identifying and using effective "probes"
  • Effective superior, peer, and subordinate interactions
  • Applying problem solving skills
  • Applying techniques to improve team performance
  • Establishing the project team structure
  • Motivating the project team
  • Keeping the project team on track

  • Four-day courses are recommended for 28 PDUs

Level: Intermediate

Managers and mid-level professionals who are faced with increasing pressures to improve organizational performance should take this course. This course is also intended for individuals who are program directors or above and who have responsibility for improving the effectiveness of their organizations. Course participants should have project management experience and understand project management processes and techniques.

If enrolled in the Project Management Certificate program, it is recommended (but not required) that the Essentials of Project Management course is taken first. Remaining courses in the certificate program may be taken in any order.
